Embarking on a multi-day horse tour with Hacienda del Chalan offered an adventure steeped in the grandeur of Peru’s Sacred Valley. Over three days, our journey took us from the lush trails of Urubamba to the historic depths of Huchuy Qosqo and beyond, each step and trot filled with breathtaking views and rich history.
Day One: Setting Off to Huchuy Qosqo Our adventure began with the warmth of the rising sun at our backs as we set out from the stable grounds. Riding alongside the serene Urubamba River, we passed through verdant valleys that led us near Calca. The horseback climb toward Huchuy Qosqo commenced as the sun started its descent, casting an ethereal glow across the landscape. Arriving at our first stop in the embrace of nightfall, the sky unfolded above us in a blanket of stars, offering a celestial spectacle that enhanced the magical atmosphere of our rustic lodging. The night was spent sharing stories and enjoying local cuisine, prepared by our incredibly hospitable hosts.
Day Two: The Ascent and Descent After a hearty breakfast, we continued our ascent. The path grew steep, compelling us to dismount and walk alongside our trusty Peruvian Paso horses. This segment of the trek was both challenging and invigorating, pushing us to our limits as we climbed to an altitude of 4800 meters. The summit offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges—a reward well worth the rigorous hike. The descent was equally thrilling, with our horses skillfully navigating the winding trails down to Chinchero. Along the way, we marveled at Lake Piruay, where the changing light danced across the water, creating a mosaic of blues and greens.
Day Three: Return through the Fields The final day began with a ride through the fields surrounding Chinchero, offering us stunning views of the snow-capped Veronica mountains. Our lunch in Maras was a delightful break, filled with good food and great views. Refreshed and recharged, we commenced the last leg of our journey. Climbing one final peak, we were granted one last sweeping vista of the Sacred Valley before making our way back to Hacienda del Chalan.
