Cherating Beach is a different beast during monsoon season. The waves grow bigger, stronger, and wilder—perfect for surfing. There’s a specific spot where the waves get pushed up and outwards before breaking, creating a point break. This is where the perfect waves for surfing are created!
I had my first taste of surfing in Phuket, where I practiced on small waves and learned a lot. But now, I wanted to take things further, surf real waves, and truly challenge myself. Point Break Cherating was the perfect place to do it. They gave me a lesson, provided a surfboard, and set me up for an unforgettable experience. To speed up my learning, I also spent time watching countless YouTube tutorials, combining everything I learned on and off the board to catch as many waves as possible for riding a wave is truly and addicting feeling.
It didn’t take long to realize just how powerful the ocean is. Getting into position was a workout—the waves constantly pulled at me, making every movement feel like it didn’t get me anywhere. Sometimes, I got caught in the white wash, where wave after wave pounded me relentlessly. I tried to stand my ground, but even the sand beneath me shifted with the force of the water, thus pushing me back to shore a little. And because of heavy surge after the wave, the first two steps forwards are soo slow. And then the next wave is already there.
Despite the brutal conditions, I loved every second of it. The rush of catching a wave, standing up, and feeling the sheer power of the ocean beneath me. Surfing is more than just one of many watersports— it’s a test of skill and determination, a battle against the forces of nature to get an incredible thrill from using those same forces of nature to ride the waves.
DS Adventure Travels is always looking for the next great adventure sports adventure, and surfing in Cherating was definitely one of them. I have a new level of respect for surfers and the ocean itself. If you ever want to have fun while testing your endurance and developing a new skill, surfing Cherating is the way to do it.
