From Zero to Hero: My Kitesurfing Breakthrough

I finally rode a kiteboard! My Hoa’s shallow lagoon and Mia Kiteboarding’s expert lessons helped me conquer the waves and ride with control.

I’d already learned the waterstart. But every time I tried to ride, I’d lose control and fall. That changed thanks to Mia Kiteboarding in My Hoa, Phan Rang. Duy, the instructor, is a legend, seriously. He took me all the way back to the basics. No board, no distractions. First: kite control. On land, he drilled the powerdive into my muscle memory. On sea, he clipped himself to my harness to make sure I could manage power before even touching a board. The result? I was dragged through the water like a seal, but I laughed the whole time. This was progress.

“Just do the same on the board,” Duy said. And I did. I finally rode. Not a couple of seconds. A full, controlled ride until I chose to stop. The difference with before was huge: some tweaks in posture, consistent power control, and being present in the moment.

I had 4.5 hours of lessons with Mia Kiteboarding, and they gave me the confidence to finally rent my own gear. But even more important, I learned that kitesurfing starts with respect for the basics. Before I jump in the water with a board, I will always practise the basics first. Each location, day and gear is different. Better to spend 15 minutes practicing without a board than waste 30 being dragged along the coast like a windblown crash test dummy.

The My Hoa lagoon is is perfect for learning: shallow and flat as far as the eye can see. We’re talking knee-deep water with no waves. If you mess up, just stand up, re-center, and go again. That’s what made the difference for me. In deeper water, every mistake cost more time. And the more mistakes you can make in an hour, the more you can learn.

Duy’s approach: calm, clear, and safe, made me a better kitesurfer. If you’re a beginner, or stuck on that last step before becoming independent, this is where you want to be.

Kitesurfing is one of the most rewarding adventure sports adventures, but it’s also one of the trickiest to learn. With the right guidance and the right waters, you’ll feel the moment you go from “getting dragged” to “riding like a boss.”

If you’re ever in Vietnam and want to learn kite Phang Rang, go to Mia Kiteboarding. Dreamstarter Adventure Travels couldn’t be more stoked with the experience.
