I recently began an adventurous journey with a discovery course of kitesurfing Koh Phangan. I’m now a Level 1 kitesurfer, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start then with Kite Club on Koh Phangan. The location is ideal for beginners thanks to a manmade sandbank further out in the water. This creates a calm inner lake where you can stand anywhere, even as the big ocean waves crash on the outer bank. It’s the perfect environment for mastering the basics without worrying about deep water.
The course began with theory, where I learned how to assess the Spot, Environment, and Activity (SEA) to determine if conditions were safe for my skill level. Next, I dove into the details of unpacking and launching the kite, as well as understanding the safety features of the gear. The systems are simple yet incredibly smart, designed to keep you safe even when things don’t go as planned.
When I put the theory about the wind window into practice for controlling the kite, I noticed how tiny movement adjust the kite’s position easily, affect its power and control greatly. It’s fascinating how small movements can have such a big impact. This is where I realized the importance of mastering kite control before even thinking about getting on a board. Kitesurfing can be dangerous without proper training, so I was happy to take my time and get it right.
In the water, I practiced kite control under the guidance of an International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) certified instructor. Their professionalism, combined with a friendly and humorous approach, made the experience both safe and very enjoyable. Feeling secure allowed me to experiment more and truly understand how the kite reacts to my movements. Anytime things could have gotten risky, the instructor was there to step in before it became an issue.
The course left me excited for more. Dreamstarter Adventure Travels is eager to continue training and progress to higher levels of kitesurfing. The feeling of controlling the power of the wind is exhilarating, and I can’t wait to see what’s next in this adventure sports adventure.
