Conquering Heights: Rock Climbing in Railay

I spent three days rock climbing in Railay, learning knots, lead climbing, and multi-pitch techniques while enjoying incredible views.

Waking up early every morning, catching a boat to Railay, and spending the day climbing limestone cliffs—this was my life for three days, and I loved every second of it. The combination of learning new skills, pushing my limits, and enjoying stunning views made this an unforgettable adventure sports adventure.

On the first day, I learned the fundamentals: reweaving the figure-eight knot and belaying. These are essential for rope climbing and the foundation for everything that followed. While tying a solid knot is crucial, learning how to belay properly was even more important. Having someone’s life in your hands as they climb requires full focus and trust.

The second day was when things got more intense. I learned lead climbing, meaning I had to clip the rope into anchors along the way while making my ascent. Clipping in with one hand while hanging onto the rock with the other took some serious coordination. The anchors were spaced about 2–3 meters apart, so if I fell just before clipping into the next anchor, I could fall 4–6 meters. It wouldn’t kill me, but it could result in some bruises—or worse. The added risk gave an adrenaline rush that made climbing even more exciting.

Day three was all about multi-pitch climbing, a whole new challenge. I learned how to set up a belay station mid-wall (which you can see me doing in the video), belay my instructor from above, and rappel down safely. Setting up an organized belay station was key—it had to be efficient and safe for both the climber and belayer. After plenty of practice, we did two real multi-pitch climbs. The highlight was rappelling from the bat cave, an epic descent with an unbeatable view.

By the end of the course, I felt confident with my climbing techniques, knot-tying, lead climbing, and multi-pitch skills. This experience was not just about climbing—it was about pushing my limits, trusting the process, and embracing the thrill of heights.

If you ever find yourself in Railay, I highly recommend trying rock climbing. It’s not just about reaching the top—it’s about the journey, the technique, and the challenge along the way. Read my other inspirational posts on Dreamstarter Adventure Travels.
